Stray pets flood Whatcom Humane Society shelters

- THE BELLINGHAM HERALD
The Whatcom Humane Society has been inundated with stray pets following this year's Fourth of July celebrations.
"We thought the cool weather would create less of an impact, but the reverse was true," said Whatcom Humane Society Executive Director Laura Clark.
Both shelters have received a flood of scared, stray pets - mostly dogs - since the afternoon of Sunday, July 4.
On the afternoon of Monday, July 5, the Williamson Way shelter received 14 stray dogs, Clark said. The average number of strays for a normal afternoon is one or two.
If you are missing a pet, Clark said to visit the Whatcom Humane Society shelters to look for your animal.
Due to the large number of animals the shelters are receiving, pets cannot be identified over the phone.
People are encouraged to bring a picture of their pet when they visit the shelters. Clark also advised that people post lost pet ads in The Bellingham Herald classifieds or Craigslist.
The Williamson Way shelter is at 3710 Williamson Way, and the Baker Creek shelter is at 1661 Baker Creek Place.
